you know when i said i'd tell you about new year's?

well i wasn't lying.

so we went to see blonde redhead on new year's eve, at a club off mission called mezzanine, which usually has clubby shows. but anyway, we had dinner at that amazing vegetarian japanese restaurant, and then went back to ava's to kill some time - we'd found out that blonde redhead weren't supposed to go on until around 12.30. so we went over there and watched arrested development until around 10, then went by the bar gestalt where she and all the other nerdy bike people were hanging out. we, or at least i, stood around awkwardly until around 11.30 when we started to head over to mezzanine. we got there just before 12, so we were able to celebrate with all these people we did not know. but anyway, it took blonde redhead an inordinately long time to come onstage, but when they did it was awesome. kazu was as usual wearing something totally ridiculous but which she pulled off flawlessly - in this case, what looked like an oversized, ripped-up t-shirt which barely covered her bum and some awesome boots. they played 2 new songs which were rad and then a lot of stuff from their newest record and everyone's favourite, in particular. but you know what? i don't love that song. but anyway, the highlight of the entire evening, in fact possibly all of 2007 up to that point, was this knackered-off-her-rocker girl who kept rushing the stage, in front of which was a security gate that photographers were behind. she kept squishing them! anyway, she started jumping up and down and screaming, and managed to JUMP ONSTAGE while blonde redhead were playing, and she was on her back, kicking her legs up in the air, like doing bicycle kicks you know? and then she rolled over, onto her hands, and did kicks into the air that way, all the time her saggy bum hanging out, she was totally raucous. the band were just kind of looking at each other, stupefied. then she stage-dove into the crowd, which miraculously caught her. so they keep playing, and then they have an encore break. during this break, she manages to get onstage again and was like, jumping up and down, doing jumping jacks, and then grabbed the mic! and started slurring into it something about new year's and blonde redhead. finally she jumped back into the crowd which miraculously caught her again. then the band came out again, and this girl started getting into fights with this other girl who was standing next to us. but that's not as exciting as when she did somersaults onstage! while the band was playing! wtf!

so after that we left and went back to ava's. in san francisco on new year's eve all the buses and trains and bart are free, does halifax or other places do that too? it's pretty rad. so we went home and went to bed, because we were leaving very early the next morning to go back to my parent's. we got back around 2 in the afternoon and had some lunch at this amazing thai restaurant, thai classic, which is one of my favorite thai places ever, if not for nostalgic reasons, then for their amazing lunch specials (which weren't being served because it was a holiday). we got back to my parent's around 3 and managed not to do anything else for the rest of the day, or week for that matter. we watched a ridiculous amount of america's next top model, because VH1 was having a marathon of all 7 cycles! wednesday the 3rd was my brother's 25th birthday, which i celebrated in part by going to visit an old friend of mine from highschool who has a gorgeous little son named joshua. he will be 1 on the first of february! we talked about all the other girls from highschool who have babies and i basically had my mind totally blown. my 10 year reunion is coming up, july i think it is, and i guess i have to decide if i care enough to see these old people. when i got home i found michael, my brother and my dad elbow deep in homemade butternut squash and ricotta ravioli - even the pasta was homemade. it was amazing. my dad made a peach schnapps and onion reduction sauce - which sounds weird, but was actually amazing. they were really light, and the sauce wasn't too peachy flavored, i thought. it was really good. and my mom made ricotta cheesecake for dessert. i basically grew up with gourmet chefs for parents and it's a wonder i managed to maintain a reasonable weight. REASONABLE. we were there until the 5th, when we drove back up to san francisco. we were flying out early the next morning so it made good sense! we stayed with my friend jamie and hung out with her for the day. we went to the mission to get one last burrito from taqueria cancun, and hung around there for a bit until dinner at golden era with avi and his girlfriend karen, and ava and sean. then we went back to jamie's and pretty much just went to bed so we wouldn't be too tired to wake up at 5.30am to go to the airport to come home.

and that brings us to the end of my holiday posting extravaganza! i do have a new camera which i have yet to really take out for a spin and many rolls of instamatic film that i have to get processed. which i will obviously show you when i do.

i remember, i remember!

well i do not entirely remember, but i did think of something we did on tuesday the 19th: we went to the receiver gallery to see the show "i think we'd better split up." it is a group show featuring some artists i really like as well as someone i went to university with (hannah stouffer). anyway other than that we really just wandered around and came back to los osos on wednesday. we were here until friday the 29th, when we went back up to san francisco for new year's eve. we got into the city late that night, but woke up early-ish on the 30th and i bought my christmas present, the new pentax K10D digital SLR. behold:

(so all you people better hire me for photo jobs.)

before going out for breakfast with ava (whom we stayed with again. bless her heart, she was out pretty much the whole time so we got to sleep in her ridiculously comfortable bed) and some of her friends at the st. francis fountain on 24th street. while there we spied on trans am eating their breakfast. afterwards we all split off and michael and i resumed our perpetual wandering of san francisco. sometime by mid-afternoon we met up with our friend kira and some of her friends to brave the throngs of post-holiday shoppers, which to our utter lack of surprise were completely unreasonable and we hightailed it out of there pronto. we went up to hayes valley to look at expensive shops and while i accompanied kira and her friends for dinner at frjtz, michael went up to a bike shop near haight street. for dessert we went to citizen cake, where michael met up with us later on. kira and her posse wanted to go drink at noc noc, a bar on lower haight, so michael and i yet again split off and michael needed to get some dinner before going to slim's to see chavez. which i didn't go to with him. i had had plans to hang out with jamie at her place and watch movies but i wasn't able to get ahold of her, so i justwent back to ava's and watched a thoroughly harrowing film called "children of men" after which i want to die but by that time michael came back and saved me and all was well.

on sunday we again awoke early and i had wandering plans. i wanted to go to dogpatch, a neighborhood near potrero hill where there are supposedly the oldest buildings in the city. for some reason they withstood the earthquake in 1906, so many of them date back to the 1860s. we walked there from ava's, which wasn't far, and found some really amazing old buildings. i took pictures, but not with the digital, so i hope to have them processed when i get back to halifax. we also found a hell's angels clubhouse! after that we went to glen park because i had read in dwell magazine about a street in glen park called laidley that was SUPER CUTE. so we went, and gosh darn was it ever cute. i also took pictures there which i will definitely post because it was so unbelievably cute. here is an example of how cute it was: the end of noe street crosses laidley, and some members of the neighborhood had attached an "L" to the end of "noe" on the streetsign and also threw some holiday decorations onto it. CUTE! after that we went back to hayes because michael wanted to get some shoes, and we went to a cafe nearby and got the best soy chai ever. we went back up to haight afterwards and went to giant robot, where michael bought a ron rege print. from there we wanted to go to dinner at this vegetarian japanese restaurant we found in the mission called cha-ya and it was actually the best meal i've had other than homecooked in a really long time. that was around 7 and the blonde redhead show we were going to for new year's wasn't supposed to start until around 12.30, so we went back to ava's and watched arrested developement in the meantime. i'll do another long and boring post about the blonde redhead show laterrrr.
